Melbourne Vintage Clothing, Jewellery and Textiles Show – this weekend!

May 26, 2011 By Cass

Wildilocks is just brimming over with busy-ness of late, with all salons heavily booked and with a whole lot of new faces lately, and we expect many more in the upcoming months. Welcome! We’ve had lots of new stock and increasing amounts of vintage focused clients, which leads me to today’s post.

Melbourne has it’s very own Vintage Fair happening this weekend! Organised by Sydney Vintage Clothing fair’s Janel Morrissey, 50 exhibitors from all over Australia will be gathering at the Exhibition Hall at the Melbourne Showgrounds from 5.30 tonight and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Janel’s Sydney fair is reputed to be the best in Oz – a true vintage event with people dressing up, dancing, hair and make up tutorials, talks and presentations and fashion parades. At 12.30pm on Saturday, Nicole Jenkins, proprietor of Circa Vintage Clothing in Fitzroy Melbourne and author of Love Vintage will present a parade of vintage fashions from the 1920s to 1970s featuring swimwear, day wear, evening wear and ballgowns. Cass Edwards, owner of Wildilocks, will be on hand to assist with hair wrangling too. An event not to be missed!

See the event website for more information – and the basic details are below. Hope to see you there!

Daily Deals time again!! Melbourne – you’re up!

May 19, 2011 By Cass

Hey folks,

We have put up our first daily deal for Melbourne! We had SUCH an overwhelming response to our Perth deal which sold out 1000 deals in less than 5 hours! that we’ve had to put a few restrictions on this one and have not put it up as a main deal so we don’t have such a crazy response; no Saturday or late night appointments, and the limit is much lower as we have less capacity in our Melbourne salon as we are already very booked up and have slightly lower staff levels than normal at the moment. But Melbourne has been asking, so we will deliver!

Jump in while you can! It’s live for 24 hours only, or until SOLD OUT!

One day deal for NZ’s newest deal site, TreatMe: $39 cut & blowdry!

March 26, 2011 By Cass

TreatMe has snaffled up Wildilocks in quite a coup for us – the first hair salon in New Zealand to be featured on the site! Having said that it’s a quieter Sunday slot (and not for the whole weekend as some sites do – launching midnight Saturday night has got to be the toughest slot possible) – we’ve not had a Sunday slot before, with previous deals being weekdays and meeting minimum sales within minutes – but it seems everyone’s asleep or still out partying! Never mind, there’s a whole day to snap up an awesome deal with a Cut, Treatment, Massage & Blowdry for a mere
$39! Head over to TreatMe to grab it – but remember, it’s only for Wellington, and only til midnight!

Circa Nocturna!
The alternative fashion show that we all love each year is on again Saturday March 12th! As always Wildilocks will be there to support alt fashion, and will be designing some cool hair for some of the designers on the night. DollyQ will be showing us all how it’s done, and her distinct corsetry and other fab designer ‘wares are available at all three Wildilocks salons as well as on our web store: www.wildilocks.com/webstore/. You can buy tickets for Circa from Moshtix this year, head here to buy – it’s only a few days away now! One or two spaces still available to get your hair done the Wildilocks way in our Melbourne salon on this date so you also look amazing, but these are almost full! Call (03) 9642 3384 if you’d like to see if we can squeeze you in.

Rouge Foncé!
Our favourite rock-cabaret band Rouge Foncé is coming in to play with Wildilocks soon for more vintage hair delight! If you caught them at Euchronia (and if you missed Euchronia BOY did you miss something grand!) then you’d understand why we love to style hair for these gals – they are hot and rock the vintage glam do’s we create with an edge of punk and a huge dollop of awesome. (sigh). Check out the site, catch them at a gig and as soon as we have some new pics of vintage hair on these babes we’ll be posting those all over including on…

Tumblr!
Wildilocks is now on Tumblr! OMG how we love Tumblr. **sparkle** Check out our page as we post all the cool things that inspire us, and make us love working with hair and alternative fashion. We love any excuse to create amazing things, and we’d love to create them on YOU! We have already loaded up pics of beautiful and exciting work, and we are so ready to play. We are also VERY keen to answer your burning hair and fashion questions, so if you have a question you’d like us to answer, head over to our ask page asap!

Gallery!
And now that we are showing off…we have updated our website gallery with lots of new images and restored some others that we had prior to updating our gallery program (to one that is much cooler). Are you there? Wanna be? If you have had your hair done by Wildilocks and you wanna share then email your pics to and tell us about your awesome experience. Can’t wait to see what you send us!

Training
OK, got you all excited? Wanna have something fabu done with your hair and save a little cashola while you do? Then fill in our model registry for any of our three salons and tell us what you are interested in. We call models based on the requested styles, the training topics available at the time and the times that are suitable for training in each salon (these will vary). If you ever wanted to try a Vintage style, a splash of colour or some extensions then this is a great way to start your Wildilocks addiction. (mwhahaha…ohh wait…)

Chicstar and other awesomeness
Chicstar is a new label for us and our first order will be coming in the very near future, we are very excited about adding this label, they have a huge variety of very cool alternative clothing that we know you will love. We’ll add them to the web store asap, but if you can’t wait (we can’t) then drop into our salons and check it out from early April! And while you are there check out other great items we have: awesome accessories like kitty ears, tails, UV Nail polish, pocket watches and more. We love love love labels such as DollyQ, Phaze, Nubia (new winter stock will be arriving April as well!) and our own Wildilocks label “LockGear”; boasting the world’s coolest and most comfortable phat jeans (omg they’re amazing, you need these to live), awesome tops, skirts and pants, all 100% unisex and all 100% Wildilocks. We also have an increasing stock of excellent ALT magazines, including Coilhouse, Fiend Magazine, Hit&Miss for rollerderby fans, and for the slightly saucy, we have Filament. If you like to shop online, we ship worldwide!

That’s all for this month: we’ll send some reminders of the MMMSSS sale over the next few weeks, so you don’t miss out!

xoxo

Earthquake update, and an offer from Wellington Wildilocks

February 28, 2011 By Cass

All the donations that have been pouring from all over the world to Christchurch have been truly amazing: there has been over $10 million dollars donated to the Red Cross, as well as countless other drives.

Our NZ branch has been trying to think of a way we can help that is more personal, as we’re up in Wellington where life has been going on pretty much as usual. So, if you’ve arrived in Welly some time in the last week as a refugee from Christchurch, we’d like to help you get a little bit of normal back in your lives, by offering you a free haircut. It’s only a little thing, but we hope it may help a few of you who’ve been suddenly displaced and wondering what to do next.

Please call 04 8033239 to make a booking, and we apologise for the necessity but we will need to see proof of address as this is an offer for genuine Christchurch resident refugees only.

Thankyou to all customers and suppliers who have expressed their concern over the past week. We will be observing 2 minutes silence today @ 12.51pm for those affected by #eqnz : we hope you are too, wherever you are in NZ or the world.

Christchurch Earthquake.

February 23, 2011 By Cass

Wildilocks’ presence in New Zealand is approaching a year now, and it’s been a crazy busy one with moving our Perth salon in October/November and then running Euchronia in December last year in Melbourne, too! 2011 got off to a crazy start for Australia, with floods, cyclones and the ever-present bushfires, it’s been a hard slog for many in Oz over the past couple of months, let alone the rest of the world. New Zealand had been relatively unscathed in comparison: until two days ago. I just want to reassure those of you who may not know New Zealand well, Wellington where we are is a long way from Christchurch, but we have friends down there (and just about everyone in New Zealand seems to know someone in Christchurch) and wish to send all the love we can to the people suffering there right now. This is the first time ever that New Zealand has declared a national state of emergency – yes, it’s bad. Very bad.

A friend of mine and Regional Burning Man rep, Mark Stirling, sent a message out last night with some useful information regarding the quake, which with his permission I’d like to share with those of you who may have questions, as his message answers a lot.

Mark writes:

“At this time I would normally write a note to you all about the great event of Kiwiburn, and the excitement of an upcoming Decom. While this is indeed worthwhile talking and thinking about, I thought it appropriate to instead take off my “Kiwiburn regional hat ” and briefly put on my “daytime job hat” to talk about our devastating Christchurch earthquake of yesterday (I am an earthquake scientist at GNS Science). Many of you have been emailing and texting me with questions about the earthquake, and those of you overseas have also been sending your concerned thoughts (thank you very much). Here are answers to some common questions that have come up:

– The earthquake was an aftershock of the Sept 2010 magnitude 7.1 earthquake. It is typical for the largest aftershock to be about 1 magnitude unit less than the mainshock, so yesterdays M6.3 event was about the right size for the largest aftershock. The quake was much closer to Christchurch, and shallower than the Sept 2010 quake, which is why it caused so much damage. We know it is an aftershock as it is within the zone of aftershocks from the 2010 quake, and it has happened less than a year after the mainshock ( a year is short in seismology terms). We expect aftershocks to continue for some time yet, but don’t have any numbers on this as yet.

– Anything you hear about the Canterbury quakes being the start of an “earthquake cascade” up and down NZ should be taken with less than a grain of salt. There are no statistically valid findings that show this is going to happen. Any kind of earthquake forecast or prediction methodology has to be thoroughly reviewed and tested many times over before it can be taken seriously. Just remember though, that NZ is an active country in nearly every way, and we should be prepared for anything. Earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanoes and tsunamis. Find out more about where you live.

– In terms of our earthquake hazard estimates for the country (my main field of work when I am not overseas!), the strong earthquake ground shaking in yesterdays quake was equivalent to what we would expect for CHCH on average about once every 10000 years. Unfortunately this very rare strong shaking happened in our lifetime, and in fact in our civilisation! There is plenty of evidence as to the rarity of this shaking in the CHCH area. Not only the 100-plus year old CHCH Cathedral received the worst damage ever, but features like the old abandoned seacliffs in the Sumner/Redcliffs area have been majorly damaged for the first time since they were formed thousands of years ago.

– The liquefaction mainly happens where sandy/muddy materials have a high water table, and the shaking causes the materials to lose their internal tension and turn into flowing, bubbling liquid. Much of CHCH is on liquefiable materials, particularly in the eastern parts of the city.”

If you’d like to help, there are a number of ways to do so from outside New Zealand, where I imagine the majority if you reading this are. Links are below:

Donate to the Red Cross in New Zealand (if you can get through: site has been very overloaded, there is an alternative site c/o GrabOne here), in Australia and in the UK too.

Stunning new Tesla Coil poster and swathe of new Local & International Acts announced!

November 25, 2010 By Cass

It is with very great pleasure that we can finally announce a major update to the Euchronia bill, and reveal our new poster (click for large version) – which has a fantastic story of its own involving death-defying feats with Tesla Coils c/o the very talented Peter Terren of Tesla Down Under! But that’s a longer story, and deserves an entire post of its own — which we shall bring you very soon, but not today. Today is dedicated to our exciting new international and interstate attractions!

UNDERBELLY DANCER – MELUSINA

Firstly, we would like to introduce the very lovely Melusina, a star dancer and teacher with Underbelly, Victoria’s premiere Bellydance school and highly recommended by one of our star acts from 2008, Ma’isah of Raqs Gothique. Read more about Melusina here.

IVIZIA [USA]

Secondly, we are very excited to add to our bill a stunning lass from California, USA – the very talented Ivizia who specialises in awesome fire performance. Read more about Ivizia here.

DIJ DIJOR [SYD]

Fresh from The Steampunk Symposium as part of the Under the Blue Moon festival in Sydney earlier this year, Gentleman Adventurer, Stewart Rule & steampunk maker, Sir Dij Dijor brings to Euchronia a selection of his finest contraptions and inventions for your wonderment and awe. Delight in witnessing the awesome Time Machine! Thrill to the power of the Proto Plasmic Wave Blaster!

DR VELLOCET and his POLYPLASMIC ARCOPHONE (featuring “ELECTRA”)

Joining us from the wilds of Western Australia is the very dapper Dr Vellocet and his Polyplasmic Arcophone (Featuring “Electra”). The arcophone is a feat of science, melding electrical energy with sound! Read and see more about the Arcophone at The Artifactory website here.

SFORZANDO

And finally for this announcement, the return performance of the fantastic SFORZANDO, the 8-piece pirate punk extravaganza whose 2008 Euchronia set blew the audience away. In their words:

“SFORZANDO follow the three ancient rules of piracy.

Rule 1: Respect the music of the ocean.
Rule 2: Find treasure.
Rule 3: Loudly.

SFORZANDO intend to steal steampunks to work on their pirate ship ‘The Evil Betty’. You have been warned.”

Steampunks, beware indeed!

For more about any of the acts in the lineup, including DJs and everything else on offer (and there’s more to come!) please head to the Acts & Attractions page on euchronia.com.

Tana Karo will, unfortunately, not be performing at Euchronia.

Euchronia is still seeking submissions for….

The Artisans’ Bazaar

We have spaces for several stalls at the bazaar, if you are interested in selling your wares, please check out the Bazaar page for more information and an application form.
